By the time of Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Skywalker had become a legendary Galactic Master, revered for his role in defeating the Galactic Empire and restoring balance to the Force.
Haunted by the failings of his Jedi Order and the fall of his nephew, Ben Solo (Kylo Ren), to the dark side, Luke exiles himself to Ahch-To, the location of the first Jedi Temple. He severs his connection to the Force, burdened by guilt and a belief that the Jedi should end.
Rey eventually finds him on Ahch-To, seeking his guidance. Initially resistant, Luke is eventually convinced to train her, setting in motion the events that will determine the fate of the galaxy.
